Red Grouse - Soap opera of the moorlands

Follow the life and death story of the red grouse on the National Trust's High
Peak moorlands.

Between May and October 2008 we will be bringing you 6 monthly episodes in the
soap opera of the Peak District moorlands' most iconic bird.

We will follow the bird from brooding hens nesting with their eggs in spring
to young birds facing winter taking in the shooting season that begins on the
12th August. Interviews with National Trust staff, tenants and gamekeepers will
open up the world of moorland management that maintains healthy populations of
red grouse.

Every year thousands of young red grouse are born on the Peak District moorlands,
the most southern part of their range. The red grouse stays on the moors all year
round. Its distinctive call and flight are a distinctive part of the moorlands.
The National Trust manages the moors for the grouse, promoting the growth of heather
and revegetating eroded peat. There is a short article about Geoff Eyre, our interviewee
in episode 4, in the Guardian on the 9th April.

The series is produced by Peak Experience in partnership with the National Trust.

What is a Podcast?

A podcast is an MP3 audio file that you can play on your computer or MP3 player
in an audio playing application such as iTunes, Windows Media Player or Real Player.
You can click on the download link to play each podcast episode in one of these
applications and save it to your computer. You can subscribe to receive the latest
episodes automatically as soon as they're available. You can stop receiving the
files at any time.

In order to subscribe you need an internet connection and a web browser with
an inbuilt Feed Reader. Downloadable Feed Readers are also available free of charge.
The web browser or downloaded software can check the Peak Experience website for
new episodes and automatically download them for you. iTunes also has this function.

If you listen to audio using Windows Media Player or Real Player we recommend
you choose the mp3 version. For those with iTunes you can listen to either the
MP3 or the AAC/m4a version. The latter has embedded photos that automatically
appear in iTunes as the podcast plays. To subscribe to either feed in iTunes click
on one of the RSS feeds below and copy the URL. In iTunes go to Advanced, select
Subscribe to Podcasts and paste the URL into the iTunes box that appears. If you
have chosen the AAC/m4A feed and want to see the embedded photos in iTunes go
to View and select Show Artwork.
